Across Moral Issues, Toy Guilt Trip, and A New Future, Tyler Knight leaves the 22nd century Department of Relativity for March 2020 Los Angeles. With Commander Edla Fromm, he hunts Ashley Fromm's stolen paintings while COVID shots, masks, and White Batch hoodies fill the streets. Khalid pulls him into a smash and grab at Archie Klos's Glendale toy shop, then a roof entry at the museum, while Benny Dubious signs off from afar. Tyler tasers Edla to sell the cover, later hits Benny instead of Mayor Ted Otenio with paintballs to stay in character, and ends up on painting duty with Sven Morgan. Mot the Silent Judge scores every choice from the mall chase with Koki Taiyou to the Laurel Canyon escape, right up through how the operation and Tyler's commander ceremony ultimately play out.

Hoffman writes in short titled scenes and talky chapters that jump from Khalid's war room to mall security and the space station cafeteria. Dialogue does most of the heavy lifting. The boxed toy talks back in Tyler's head throughout, and the guilt over what he took doesn't stay buried for long.

If you want polished prose and a tight plot, look elsewhere. If you want a messy trainee story about stolen toys, White Batch jobs, and guilt that outlasts the medal, sit with this omnibus.
